What is an electric assisted bicycle?

An electric assisted bicycle (also called an e-assist bike or an electric bike) has the same legal status as an unassisted bicycle in Oregon.
However, that status comes with certain requirements. The electric assisted bicycle has to be equipped with a seat or saddle, not have more than three wheels, and be able to be pedaled. Furthermore, an electric assisted bicycle has to be equipped with an electric motor that is limited to 1000 watts and is incapable of propelling the electric assisted bicycle any faster than 20 miles per hour on level ground. The final requirement is very important. The bicycle must be incapable of traveling more than 20 MPH, not just ridden under 20 MPH. If it is able to travel over 20 MPH it is considered a moped.
